Thinking about the green roof

After a slow start to the week, when rain delayed play, the builders put up a cover to allow them to continue on the walls. So by Wednesday the outside layer was up to the roof.

Then by lunchtime friday, the inside layer was finished and a few hours later and the roof struts were on.

It is really possible to see how it is going to look now.

Once it is all kitted out with a nice work bench I am guessing I will be spending a bit of time in here.

The roof goes on tomorrow and then next week they will fit the windows and doors, run the electricity cable down and start plastering.

So I'm now starting to think what to do with the roof.  There are several types of green roof the most common being the sedum ones:

These are the very thin soil types of roof, designed to cope with little soil and water. The problem is they never really look as good as this, instead they often look a bit scruffy.

Then you have ones with deeper soil and more lush planting:

Looks great but needs a really strong roof and lots of water.

One of my friends has built a little green roof which is very typical of the succulent rockery in her back garden.

So nice plants (I think so, no rude comments!),  thin soil, low water, but a bit sparse and only interesting when you get up close to it.

Another option is do do some sort of design:

Ok maybe not, someone would suggest we draw a certain dog!

Maybe something in between the two:

Something like that would work, with maybe a few taller plants so it can be seen a bit more from the house. Still lots of planning to do.
